Thanks so much for commenting on my article about the Democrats sleepwalking into a Trump presidency.
I've never been one for voting for the lesser of two evils, but this election might be an exception. Biden embarrasses me, but Trump actually scares me. I can easily imagine him going down a path like that of Stalin, Mao or Hitler. I don't know about Trump starting major war or murdering millions of Americans, but an economic catastrophe would be a certainty.
As for investing in wind and solar to save us from our insatiable need for energy -- I don't think so. Even if we cover the natural beauty of the earth with ugly windmills and soil killing solar panels, it would just a stopgap measure. Every time our power supply meets demand, the demand increases.
We can never have enough energy.
As an aside, I do not understand why zoning laws don't demand that every new or remodeled house have solar panels on the roof. Even if they did not generate energy, they would provide shade for the house, which would reduce the need for AC. Instead, we cover the desert with solar panels, creating shade that kills the ecosystem beneath them creating new and unpredictable ecosystems, and then we transport the power to neighborhoods miles away.
Dumb.
I think we need to start building nuclear plants and see what we can to accelerate thermonuclear power generation. I understand that people are concerned about nuclear accidents but modern reactors are not the same as the Three Mile Island or Chernobyl designs. Anyway, endless wind and solar farms destroys the environment too, just in a different way.
I not sure how wise it would be to start importing cars from China. We need to be make them here and export them to China. The trouble is that we no longer make things -- American industry focuses on finance, not production. The finance departments of many major car manufactures and iconic American companies (like GE) have bigger finance departments than engineering departments.
We make our money mostly with debt financing -- the US Treasury selling bonds backed by thin air to five huge banks who then sell them to the rest of the world. That’s where our deficit, national debt and inflation are rooted. Not in working people making too much money as Jay Powell says.
It would be a heavy lift to bring the US economy back to an industrial one. Unless Trump wins the presidency and destroys, the worldwide economy and we have to rebuild it from scratch, that is. Just trying to find the bright side of a Trump presidency.
Again, thank you for your comments.
