Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I agree — part of the reason Trump has a shot at re-election is that he won the first election. But, that might hint at a deeper truth — I suspect something fundamental has changed with the American people. Both parties are in disarray and people seem to be looking for a change. The 2016 election was all about change and the two real competitors were Sanders and Trump. (Clinton and the DNC seem to have torpedoed Sanders chances). No matter which of those two won the election we would be reeling at the speed and degree of change.

I suspect that the collapse of the industrial economy n 2016–08 has something to do with this. During the run-up to the 2016 election we stopped hearing about a “recovery” and people started realizing we would never go back to what once was. Traditional jobs are going away, we are not likely to have a better standard of living than our parents, education is likely to diminish future prospects because it costs more than it returns, women earn more than men and that upsets everything about marriage and family…the list goes on.

This is why the parties are in such disarray, both are looking for platforms and policies that resonate with voters.

During times like this people look for strong decisive leaders, a “national daddy”, promising easy answers, strength and security. That’s what they got with Trump, (or Sanders with is promises of “free” everything).
